Michel Pigeon elected President of CREPUQ

Montreal, November 30, 2006 - The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) announces the election of its new President, Michel Pigeon, Rector of Université Laval, effective December 9, 2006, until May 31, 2007. He succeeds Roch Denis, Rector of the Université du Québec à Montréal.

Mr. Pigeon has been Rector of Université Laval since October 15, 2002. He obtained his degree in Civil Engineering from Université Laval in 1967. With an Athlone Scholarship from the British government, he then studied at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London.

After working in the private sector for several years, Mr. Pigeon began his teaching career at Université Laval in 1972. In addition to acting as director for many graduate students, Mr. Pigeon was very active in concrete research. The work done by Michel Pigeon and his group helped to make Université Laval a world-renowned centre of excellence in that field.

His achievements have earned him numerous distinctions, including the Wason Medal for Materials Research from the American Concrete Institute (1991) and honorary doctorates from the Institut national des sciences appliquées in Lyon (2005) and the Université de Liège (2006). In 2006, he was made an Officer of the Ordre des Palmes académiques (France) and received the Josef-Hode-Keyser award from the Association québécoise des transports et des routes.

CREPUQ is a non-profit organization that comprises, on a voluntary basis, all of Quebec’s universities. It is a meeting place for the universities and a forum for exchanging ideas; it represents Quebec universities in dealings with the government and groups concerned with higher education, provides research services for university administrations, coordinates and administers common services for the universities, and constitutes a resource centre and think tank for its members.
