Montreal, June 16, 2006 - The heads of Québec universities have expressed satisfaction with the bill to amend the Supplemental Pension Plans Act, tabled by Michelle Courchesne, Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity and the minister responsible for the Quebec Régie des rentes (pension board). In her speech announcing the bill, the Minister acknowledged the special nature of universities, municipalities and daycare centres and stated her intention to issue regulations containing funding rules rules that allow for their particular characteristics.
Roch Denis, CREPUQ President and Rector of UQAM, noted, “We are pleased that this bill has been tabled; the universities have been waiting for it for a very long time”. The backgrounder issued by the Régie des rentes for the occasion mentioned that special rules for universities, municipalities and daycare centres will appear in a future regulation and, owing to the permanence of these institutions, will state that the clause regarding adverse deviations will not apply and that amortization payments for solvency deficiencies will no longer be required.
“We hope that this bill will be passed as quickly as possible and that, once it has been adopted, it will take effect as soon as possible”, concluded Mr. Denis, who again congratulated Minister Courchesne on this initiative.
