Montreal, October 24, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is proud to announce its full support for the Open Access movement.
The movement is a diverse coalition of initiatives by research and academic communities around the world, the intention of which is to ensure unrestricted free access to all publicly funded research.
For several years, a growing number of Quebec universities have been establishing initiatives to promote free access and supporting teaching staff in disseminating their research results.
“Improving access to information is a key concern of Quebec universities. By supporting the Open Access movement, our universities seek to promote the dissemination of knowledge, facilitate the work of researchers and increase their impact. Encouraging open access as an alternative to private publication in scholarly journals also demonstrates our concern for the responsible management of public funds,” noted Luce Samoisette, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université de Sherbrooke.
“Open access benefits not only researchers but Quebec society as a whole, by helping democratize access to information. In joining this global movement, our universities, and their libraries in particular, hope to play an active role nationally and internationally in ensuring the rapid, universal and lasting dissemination of research results,” added Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.
CREPUQ signed the Budapest Open Access Initiative in 2002 and added its signature to the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. Member universities are currently considering other institutional initiatives to promote open access in their various fields.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
