Montréal, October 2, 2012 – Four stellar Quebec researchers will be honoured as part of the Ça mérite d’être reconnu! competition during the Rendez-vous du Savoir event, presented by Mouvement Desjardins in association with Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton and CGI, to be held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal this coming November 14 and 15. The aim of this competition is to recognize and provide wide exposure to new and exciting “Star Researchers” enrolled in doctoral programs at Québec universities. For the first time ever, these “Star Researchers” will receive an award in the amount of $6,000 from Tourisme Montréal to support their efforts to gain international exposure for their work.
Last September 4, selection committee members hailing from the research, university and business sectors gathered for a rigorous candidate evaluation process in which they designated four winners in the following categories:
• Human and Social Sciences, Arts and Literature (one recipient)
• Natural Sciences and Engineering (two recipients)
• Health (one recipient)
Dr. Rémi Quirion, Chief Scientist of Québec, presided over this selection committee comprised of a group of carefully-chosen members.
The call for nomination went out to all universities and their research centres last spring by the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Québec Universities (CREPUQ). In all, 63 outstanding projects from 14 institutions were submitted for consideration.
“Successful positioning of Montréal as a conference and scientific meeting destination is largely due to the international recognition of our expertise, our university institutions and the excellence of our researchers. We hope that this scholarship will allow winners to proudly bear the colours of both Montréal and Québec on the international stage,” underlined the Honourable Charles Lapointe, President and Chief Executive Officer of Tourisme Montréal.
“Bringing business and universities together is what the Rendez-Vous du Savoir is all about. By recognizing young researchers, we highlight their undeniable contribution to the sustainable prosperity of Québec society, based on, among other things, a knowledge economy,” explained Monique F. Leroux, Rendez-vous du Savoir spokesperson and President and Chief Executive Officer of Mouvement Desjardins.
“The Rendez-vous du Savoir is an exceptional window onto Québec’s potential in the areas of innovation, research and entrepreneurship. By recognizing up-and-coming researchers, the Ça mérite d’être reconnu! competition encourages young researchers to pursue their work and to develop their potential to the maximum,” stated Dr. Pavel Hamet, O.Q., M.D., Ph. D., Rendez-vous du Savoir spokesperson, Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Université de Montréal, and internationally renowned researcher.
Recipient names will be announced at the beginning of November. These researchers will be awarded an honorary plaque during the Recognition Award Gala presented by Palais des congrès de Montréal on November 15. In addition to this tribute, the researchers will benefit from a multimedia visibility campaign.
