Montreal, September 20, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) was pleased with the announcement today by Premier Pauline Marois confirming that additional funding for universities, budgeted for 2012-2013, will be maintained by her government.

“True to their campaign promises, the new government will pay out the amounts stated in the 2012-2013 University Funding Plan, including funds that were to come from the tuition increase. This is a first step toward a viable and permanent solution to the problem of university under-funding. As Premier Marois said, ‘knowledge remains the best path toward individual and collective wealth.’ We must therefore do what is necessary to provide our universities with the means to fulfil their teaching and research mission and measure up against the best universities worldwide,” said Luce Samoisette, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université de Sherbrooke.

“Furthermore, with regard to the Summit on higher education, CREPUQ’s member universities restate their intention to support the government in organizing the summit and cooperating fully to make it a success. This is an extremely important event, and we believe it can have a positive and decisive impact on the future of Quebec and its university system,” added Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
