Montreal, September 19, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) extends its congratulations to Pierre Duchesne on his appointment as Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology. CREPUQ is also very pleased with the creation of a ministry that highlights the full importance of higher education, research, science and technology for Quebec society.
“We wish Mr. Duchesne much success in his new duties and offer him our full cooperation as he takes on the many challenges of the job. Quebec needs a dynamic, accessible university system to ensure its social, cultural, economic and scientific development. That system must have sufficient resources to educate the next generation on which Quebec depends so heavily, particularly in the fields of health care, education, science and engineering”, said Luce Samoisette, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université de Sherbrooke.
“University rectors and principals intend to actively support the government in organizing a Summit on higher education and making it a success. This is an extremely important event, and we believe it can have a positive and decisive impact on the future of Quebec and its university system. To make that happen, everyone involved must join forces to find a viable, permanent solution to the problem of university funding, while protecting access to a university education”, added Ms. Samoisette.
The new minister assumes his duties at a time when the research community is engaged in a broad consultation process designed to lead to the renewal of the Quebec Research and Innovation Strategy (QRIS). “The QRIS is a critical means to sustain the vitality of the Quebec economy and support innovation within businesses and organizations. Both are essential to creating collective wealth and maintaining the standard of living in Quebec”, noted Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
