2012 Quebec elections:
CREPUQ congratulates the new government and offers its full cooperation

Montreal, September 5, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) congratulates the new government and notes the historic election of Quebec’s first woman Premier. CREPUQ is offering its full cooperation in dealing with the many challenges facing Quebec today, as well as with regard to university-related issues.

Quebec’s social and economic development is largely conditional on healthy universities, the quality of the education they provide, the dynamic research conducted there and the strength and relevance of the ties they forge with their local communities and with academic institutions worldwide. Our universities must have the capacity to train the competent work force that Quebec so desperately needs – in health care, education, engineering, arts, sciences and all the other fields for which a university education is necessary,” said Luce Samoisette, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université de Sherbrooke.

CREPUQ intends to cooperate actively with the government and all members of the National Assembly so that a viable and permanent solution to the problem of university under-funding may be implemented as soon as possible. With adequate funding, the universities can hire teaching and support staff, improve pedagogical support and guidance services for students, maintain library collections and ensure updates of laboratory equipment and technology, among other critical needs,” added Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.

In addition to the problem of under-funding, CREPUQ would like to bring three other priority issues to the attention of the new government: valuing and recognizing universities’ contribution to Quebec development in order to increase their influence and enrolment; ensuring the best possible synergy between higher education and research; ensuring the renewal of the Quebec Research and Innovation Strategy.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
