Quebec universities are applying government decisions with regard to tuition fees, as they must

Montreal, August 23, 2012 – Further to various statements made in recent days regarding how university tuition will be charged for the 2012 fall semester, the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) would like to specify that universities are applying the government’s decision to the letter.

Tuition is set by the Government of Quebec, not by the universities themselves, barring exceptions stipulated by the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports.

Each university has its own invoicing and collection system for tuition fees, and all institutions are proceeding as usual with invoices for the 2012 fall semester. Note that a significant number of university students will be beginning the fall semester over the coming days.

Law 12 contains absolutely no provisions governing the way in which tuition fees are invoiced or collected.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
