Quebec City, May 5, 2012 - The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is pleased to have played a part in finding a solution that should ensure a return to normal at Quebec universities as soon as possible.
The agreement in principle reached between the government and representatives of student associations, with the help of unions, the Federation of Cegeps and CREPUQ, calls for the creation of a provisional Council of Universities whose members would include representatives of each party. The council’s mandate is as follows:
• Make recommendations to the Minister regarding the mandate and composition of a permanent Council of Universities;
• Examine the possibility of demonstrating recurring efficiencies in specific areas of university management, in light of best practices.
“The universities intend to contribute with an open mind to this forum, where the parties have agreed to base the discussion on current best practices,” said Luce Samoisette, Chair-Elect of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Sherbrooke University.
The agreement in principle reached today will allow for the implementation of the University Funding Plan, passed in the National Assembly. “Under the University Funding Plan, the Quebec university system will ultimately receive $967 million. This reinvestment will provide the resources necessary to help them fulfil their teaching and research mission, to the greatest advantage of students and Quebec society as a whole,” added Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.
The universities hope that students will vote in favour of the agreement in principle, and they intend to do everything possible to facilitate a speedy return to normal.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
