Montreal, April 16, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) has duly noted yesterday’s announcement by the Minister of Education, Leisure and Sport (MELS), Line Beauchamp, that she intends to discuss how universities are managed, in order to resolve the current situation.
The universities understand the need for accountability, which they already assure in multiple ways, in keeping with all standards and legislation. In fact, they are currently working with MELS to establish partnerships under which they will provide a detailed, indicator-based accounting of their performance and the use of the funds provided by the University Funding Plan.
“Our universities place a high priority on accountability. They are already engaged in an ongoing process and renew their request for a more strategic approach. It is essential that they be involved in all discussions on the subject,” said Luce Samoisette, Chair-Elect of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Sherbrooke University.
In the context of the current debate, it is worth recalling that the universities are governed by boards of directors, senates and academic program committees whose members already include students, teachers and community representatives. All of them act with the utmost professionalism in the best interests of Quebec society.
“Thanks in particular to the stringency and dedication of these volunteers, our university system has been able to grow and achieve a level of teaching quality and research performance that is the envy of many,” added Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
