Quebec universities welcome additional measures to ensure access to post-secondary education

Montreal, April 5, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) welcomes the additional measures announced by ministers Bachand and Beauchamp to ensure access to post-secondary education.

“The supplemental measures announced today to increase loans and bursaries for Quebec students will help improve access to a high-quality education provided by outstanding teachers in a stimulating academic environment, which is a priority for all university rectors and principals,” said Luce Samoisette, Chair-Elect of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Sherbrooke University.

The $21 million to cover the increase in loans and bursaries and the new mechanism for income-contingent repayment—a measure proposed by CREPUQ at the Meeting of Partners in Education—will come from the government’s University Funding Plan. This means universities will have to put in extra effort to compensate for the impact.

“In parallel with today’s announcements, it is important that students are made fully aware of the resources that can help them achieve their educational goals. We must make sure that a university education is available to anyone with the capacity and desire for one,” added Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
