2012-2013 Budget - Universities will continue contributing to Quebec’s social, cultural and economic development

Montreal, March 20, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is pleased that the Quebec budget tabled today by the Minister of Finance includes a provision to increase funding for universities, to account for the increase in enrolment anticipated by the Minister of Education, Leisure and Sport.

CREPUQ is also happy to note the increase in credits allocated to the Student Financial Assistance program for 2012-2013.

The budget contains other provisions of interest to the university community, such as an increase in tax assistance for new graduates working in a remote resource region; the establishment, in cooperation with the universities, of an Institut supérieur de coordination de la recherche et de l’innovation pour les coopératives et les mutuelles; and funding for a program to support innovation, research, development and demonstration in green technologies designed to reduce greenhouse gases.

In his speech, Minister Bachand mentioned a large number of programs designed to improve the quality of life for Quebecers, invigorate our economy and further social development. Support for the elderly, climate change, the fight against poverty, and natural resource development are among other key issues addressed in the 2012-2013 Quebec budget and towards which university research is likely to contribute.

The impact of Quebec university expertise can be seen wherever you look. Our universities are well positioned to contribute to many of the development projects announced in the budget, such as the Climate Change Action Plan, the Growing Old at Home Action Plan and the Plan Nord, and this is how they will continue participating in Quebec’s social, cultural and economic development,” said Daniel Zizian, Director General of CREPUQ.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
