Montréal, February 17, 2012 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Québec Universities (CREPUQ) welcomes today’s announcement by the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade (MDEIE) and Minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, Sam Hamad, of funding of a total of $32.1 million for research projects and equipment acquisition by Québec’s universities and research institutions.
“This investment is essential for development of university research and innovation. The entire Québec university system will benefit and be made stronger. This funding will support future scientists and consolidate our research standing in Canada and internationally. The university research infrastructure used in industry-sponsored research projects contributes directly to the competitiveness of our businesses, trains highly qualified professionals and stimulates our economy,” stated Denis Brière, Rector of Université Laval and Chair of CREPUQ’s Board of Directors.
“University education and research are keys to our society’s economic, human, social, scientific and cultural growth and development. The work of our university researchers supports improvement of Quebecers’ health, our children’s education, the quality of our environment, and our rights and freedoms. Their publications, participation in social debates and support for social innovation help to make Québec a good place to live,” noted CREPUQ President and Director General Daniel Zizian.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
