Montreal, August 5, 2011 – From August 5 to September 3, 2011, new foreign students arriving at Montréal-Trudeau Airport will get a warm, personal welcome to help them feel more comfortable as they embark on their college and university studies in Quebec. The province’s universities and 42 colleges and institutes are participating in this program, which is coordinated jointly by the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) and the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal (CRÉ Montréal).
A team of international and Quebec students will greet foreign students coming through international and domestic arrivals at Montréal-Trudeau Airport. The team will guide the new students through accelerated, simplified processing provided by a unique new service called Accueil Plus (www.accueilplus.ca). Before leaving home, foreign students register their travel information online, which allows the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to prepare study permits in advance and reduce waiting time upon arrival.
“Foreign students make an important contribution to the vitality of the Quebec university system and to Quebec’s economic, social and cultural development. Their presence enhances our education programs, as well as research and innovation. We owe these young people a warm welcome and help in adjusting to the institutions they will be attending,” noted Daniel Zizian, President and Director General of CREPUQ.
Quebec is a choice destination for international students, who come for the quality of our educational programs, our cultural vitality and overall quality of life. In 2010, close to 30,000 foreign students were registered at a Quebec college or university.
“Attracting international talent is becoming a key issue in sustaining Quebec’s productivity, innovation and competitive edge. International students constitute a rich pool of future graduates, primarily with university degrees but also with technical expertise. Considering the strong need for qualified personnel, it makes sense to put our money where the talent is readily available. We have therefore worked with our partners to create a bundle of programs to attract and welcome students and encourage them to stay here,” explained Manon Barbe, President of CRÉ Montréal.
Student reception services at Montréal-Trudeau Airport and Accueil Plus Service are made possible by financial assistance from CRÉ Montréal, with support from Quebec’s universities, the Regroupement des collèges du Montréal métropolitain (RCMM) and Cégep international. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Quebec Ministry of Immigration and Cultural Communities and Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) are also partners in the project.
