Montreal, February 23, 2011 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is extremely pleased that Premier Jean Charest, in his Opening Speech to the new session of the National Assembly, listed education as one of his government’s top priorities for the future. As the Premier said, “Since 2003, we have increased our funding to universities by nearly $1 billion. At the same time, all around us, societies are mobilising their resources in order to strengthen their universities. All of Quebec must rally around this cause. All of us will participate—the government will contribute even more, the private sector will contribute more, and students will do their fair share. Our universities must shine.” The heads of Quebec universities fully share this part of the Premier’s vision.
“As the Premier noted in his speech, our society’s success hinges on education and Quebec’s future depends on it. It is our collective and individual responsibility to see that all young people develop their full potential. Our universities are proud to contribute to development in their regions, and to Quebec’s growth overall. They do this in various ways: through the training of a highly qualified work force, through basic and applied research, and through social and technological innovation,” said Denis Brière, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université Laval.
“It is also important to note that the rectors and principals believe that any increase in tuition fees must be accompanied by the appropriate financial aid measures so that no capable student who wants to attend university is prevented from doing so for financial reasons,” added Daniel Zizian, President and Director General of CREPUQ.
CREPUQ expects the intentions stated in the Opening Speech concerning additional support for our university system to be reflected in the Finance Minister’s coming budget speech.
CREPUQ includes all Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
