Conseil supérieur de l’éducation - Notes the quality and relevance of graduate and post-graduate programs in Quebec universities

Montreal, October 19, 2010 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) applauds the brief published today by the Conseil supérieur de l’éducation du Québec (CSE) called Toward An Updated Vision Of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies.

In the brief, the CSE states its conviction that graduate and post-graduate programs have individual and social benefits stemming not just from research and innovation projects, but also from the professionals, researchers and innovators trained in those programs. These invaluable benefits have significant impacts in every sphere of human activity – social economic, scientific and cultural – and must be considered in any medium- or long-term perspective.

“We are pleased with the positive message conveyed by this brief, which acknowledges the efforts by Quebec universities to provide high-quality, relevant master’s and doctoral programs. The CSE also highlights the difficult conditions under which such efforts are being made, particularly with regard to financing,” said Denis Brière, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université Laval.

The report provides support for a number of positions publicly stated by CREPUQ, notably the call for increased financing for research. It also discusses important issues on which Quebec universities are already actively working, such as quality assurance and equivalency recognition.

“As research becomes more international, we must be able to add new vitality to university programs in Quebec to make them even more attractive to master’s and doctoral students from around the world. A graduate and post-graduate education is not only of value to the student, it also contributes to the quality of life of the general population and makes Quebec more competitive internationally,” noted Daniel Zizian, President and Director General of CREPUQ.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
