Journées du Savoir: Universities really do make a difference!

Montreal, October 13, 2010 – Journées du Savoir, a unique event organized by the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ), will be held October 18-24 across Quebec. For the second year in a row, Quebec universities will open their doors to the public to show people exactly how important universities really are in their daily lives.

Institutions across the province will be organizing a wide variety of fascinating, free activities. Among other things, people can find out how to charge an iPod using a bottle of soda, learn about human-propelled submarine prototypes, take courses on climatology, film, chemistry and the environment, and attend presentations on doping in sports, astronomy and creative economics.

For a detailed program, visit http://www.lesjourneesdusavoir.ca/ and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

“Journées du Savoir give our universities a unique opportunity to share their knowledge with the general public and show people exactly how work being done by professors, researchers and students is affecting the way we live our lives,” said Denis Brière, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université Laval.

“We’re not always aware of it, but Quebec universities are very present in our day-to-day activities. In particular, they contribute to our children’s education, the quality of our health care and the preservation of our environment. Journées du Savoir are an excellent way to experience this up close,” added Daniel Zizian, President and Director General of CREPUQ.

Something new this year: Journées du Savoir will host a special event during the first Rendez-vous du Savoir, which takes place October 20 and 21 at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. Starting at 2 p.m. on October 21, there will be a series of free presentations by well-known personalities, including Yves Beauchamp, Director General of the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), Denis Brière, Rector of Université Laval, Joëlle Noreau, Senior Economist, Mouvement des Caisses Desjardins and Pierre Noreau, President, Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS).

The subject of the presentations will be “Universities in their environment.” Following this, the outstanding researchers honoured by the Ça mérite d’être reconnu! competition will discuss the progress of their research in medicine, administrative science, kinesiology and physical education, biology and information technology. The competition was created by Rendez-vous du Savoir to recognize the remarkable work being done by the next generation of researchers.

About Rendez-vous du Savoir This event, organized by six partners from the business, academic and institutional milieus, was created to showcase the collective wealth created in the university environment. It will provide an opportunity to build new bridges between universities and the business community, and to recognize the central role Quebec universities play in making our society more creative, productive and innovative.

About CREPUQ CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
