CREPUQ pleased that education will be the focus of talks over the coming months

Montreal, September 22, 2010 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is very pleased to note that the Minister of Education, Recreation and Sports, Line Beauchamp, will make sure that education is at the heart of discussions taking place in the next few months.

“Quebec universities have high expectations of the meeting of partners in education planned for this fall, which will deal with university performance and financing. The hope is that the meeting will bring the different partners together around a common plan to correct the chronic under-financing from which our universities suffer, and improve access to a university education,” noted Daniel Zizian, President and Director General of CREPUQ.

In their ongoing concern to provide a quality education that will ensure student success, the universities enthusiastically applaud the meeting, which will also examine university performance from the perspective of continuous improvement.

For CREPUQ, it is important that the talks take place in the kind of calm atmosphere that promotes dialogue and reflection, and in which the individual interests of the groups represented can be transcended in pursuit of a common purpose.

“This meeting of partners in education will have a determining impact on Quebec’s future. It offers a rare opportunity for people to agree on the objectives we must set in order to make Quebec one of the most educated and innovative societies in North America, as well the means to achieve those ends. The success of this important meeting will require a concerted effort by all involved, and CREPUQ will contribute to the fullest,” said Denis Brière, Chair of the CREPUQ Board of Directors and Rector of Université Laval.

“Quebec needs to rally around a common goal: to make education THE priority at every level,” concluded Mr. Zizian.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and milieus concerned with university education and research. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
