Montreal, July 15, 2010 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Québec Universities (CREPUQ) was dismayed at the federal government’s decision to drop the requirement to fill out the long form of the 2011 census questionnaire. This announcement has caused serious concern among the Québec universities.
“The Québec university community deplores this decision and considers that it will result in an incalculable loss of reliable information that is critical for researchers’ work and for the Canadian public in general”, declared CREPUQ Board Chairman Denis Brière, Rector of Université Laval.
“CREPUQ asks Industry Minister Tony Clement to reconsider this decision and maintain the census procedures as they are reasonable and have proven to be very useful”, added Daniel Zizian, President-Director General of CREPUQ. CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and higher education. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
