Accueil Plus: A New Service Reduces Waiting Time for International Students at Montréal-Trudeau Airport

Montreal, July 6, 2010 – From May 17 to September 6, 2010, international students who are registered at a Québec college or university will be able to use the new Accueil Plus Service. The service combines online registration with personal arrival assistance and will simplify customs processing at Montréal-Trudeau airport, especially for students who need to receive a Canadian study permit when they arrive.

With the Accueil Plus Service, international students provide their travel information online while they are still in their country of origin. The information is sent to the service partners to expedite immigration and study permit processing and reduce waiting time by preparing paperwork in advance. Accueil Plus is an extension of the Montréal-Trudeau Welcome service for international students and has been coordinated by the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Québec Universities (CREPUQ) in partnership with the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal (CRÉ de Montréal) since 2008.

“Foreign students make a significant contribution to the vitality of the Québec university system. Their research and innovation enrich study programs and enhance cultural life. We want to give these young arrivals a warm welcome to Québec and help them integrate into their academic communities,” stated Daniel Zizian, CREPUQ President-Director General.

“CRÉ de Montréal believes in the strategic importance for regional development of attracting international talent. The organization’s initiatives help international students become more involved in Québec society. A positive first contact with the host society, even before they arrive in Montréal, is a determining factor,” added Manon Barbe, President of CRÉ de Montréal.

Accueil Plus is coordinated by CREPUQ in partnership with CRÉ de Montréal and with the support of the Regroupement des collèges du Montréal métropolitain (RCMM) and Cégep international. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the Québec Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles (MICC) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) also collaborate in this project.
