Québec Universities Attract World-Class Researchers

Montreal, May 25, 2010 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Québec Universities (CREPUQ) is delighted that Québec universities are attracting such world-class scientists as Marcel Babin (Université Laval), Younès Messaddeq (Université Laval) and Bertrand Reulet (Université de Sherbrooke) under the Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) Program.

“We are proud that Université Laval and the Université de Sherbrooke have been awarded prestigious chairs in the natural resources and energy and information and communications technologies research areas. The chairs represent an essential development investment in research and innovation at these universities. In fact, the entire Québec university system will be enriched and strengthened by these research chairs,” noted the Chair of CREPUQ’s Board of Directors, Heather Munroe-Blum, who is Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.

“These investments enable universities to attract the world’s top researchers. Such people join highly talented research teams, and this will build even more Québec expertise in these fields,” added Daniel Zizian, CREPUQ’s President and Director General.

The Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program is jointly administered by three Canadian research-funding agencies: the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The research conducted by the chairholders will focus on environmental sciences and technologies, natural resources and energy, health and related life sciences and technologies, and information and communications technologies.

CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and higher education. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
