Montreal, March 4, 2010 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is pleased with the budget just tabled by the federal Finance Minister, the Honourable James Flaherty.
The heads of Quebec’s universities welcome the substantial measures to promote the growth of research, innovation and technology transfer. The creation of a post-doctoral fellowship program, the increase in the grant councils’ budgets and the Indirect Costs of Research Program, the allocations for physics, genomics and aerospace research, and the support for technology transfer initiatives, among other things, are gladly received. In the current economy, these measures will enable university research in the country to contribute to economic revitalization and growth.
“We are happy to see that the federal government recognizes the importance of R&D, which plays an essential role in developing high-level skills, stimulating economic development and improving productivity. Having invested in university infrastructure through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, the government is now making a significant effort to stimulate and support the training of highly qualified, innovative people”, noted the Chair of CREPUQ’s Board of Directors, Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.
“The measures announced today are very encouraging, both in their vigorous support of creativity and in their leveraging of productivity and economic development. I would also like to point out that the measures announced in the budget will enable universities to maintain high-level research activities and compete with the best universities in the world”, added Daniel Zizian, President and Director General of CREPUQ.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice in relations with government and higher education. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
