Montreal, August 24, 2009 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) wishes to emphasize the need for a broad base of partners to contribute to university teaching and research. Government, the private sector, Crown corporations, alumni and students each have a responsibility to come together and provide financial support for the advancement of Quebec universities.
To this effect, in 2008, Hydro-Quebec helped most of the universities and university foundations or groups to achieve their missions, through their contributions and partnerships. By supporting higher education, the Crown corporation participates meaningfully in the advancement of knowledge and science as well as in the economic, social and cultural development of Quebec.
“Hydro-Quebec’s contributions to universities and partnerships with them go to supporting research and university teaching—all to the benefit of Quebec society as a whole. Partnerships with Hydro-Quebec and their research support are consistent with that organization’s development mandate, and the strengths of our universities. Different partners in our community must work in common cause to build an innovation society, born of collaboration in areas of knowledge and talent development. This goal is advanced by close collaboration between universities and businesses, in a manner that respects each other’s mission. The support of the donor community, as well as that of Crown corporations, is essential to ensuring the quality university teaching and research”, said Dr. Heather Munroe-Blum, President of CREPUQ and Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.
CREPUQ includes all 18 Quebec universities. The organization acts as their voice to government and for issues relating to higher education. It also fosters coordination and collaboration between universities, is a research centre for university administrations, acts as a centre for coordination and joint service delivery, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
