Montreal, June 19, 2009 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) welcomes very favourably the announcement of the implementation of the Knowledge Infrastructure Program in Quebec.
The investment of some $700 million into Quebec universities will allow the institutions to undertake needed maintenance projects that have been on hold as well as the construction of new infrastructure. Of these amounts, the federal government will provide $300 million, $300 million will come from Quebec and an additional $100 million from other partners.
Additional investment in higher education by both levels of government is essential if Quebec universities are to maintain their current levels of excellence. These investments are necessary to allow the universities to fulfil their mission of providing the highest levels of learning, maintaining teaching and fostering research that is equal to that of the best universities in the world, while contributing to the economic, social and cultural development of our society.
“The government announcement is excellent news for the universities because the Quebec Infrastructure Plan and the Federal Knowledge Infrastructure Program will cover some maintenance that has been deferred for several years and go to renovating some of our research facilities.
However, the time that has elapsed between the creation of the Knowledge Infrastructure Program will mean significant challenges for Quebec universities because some projects have to be completed before March 31, 2010. It is therefore crucial that the projects eligible for these investments be announced as soon as possible” said Dr. Heather Munroe-Blum, President of CREPUQ and Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.
CREPUQ includes all of Quebec’s universities. It is a meeting place for the universities and a forum for exchanging ideas; it represents Quebec universities in dealings with the government and other partners concerned with higher education, provides research services for university administrations, coordinates and administers shared services for the universities, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
