Dr. Heather Munroe-Blum re-elected President of CREPUQ

Montreal, June 10, 2009 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is proud to announce the re-election of Dr. Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University as its President for 2009-2010.

As the President of CREPUQ, Dr. Munroe-Blum will continue to work to promote university education and the importance to society of the development science, technology and innovation.

Dr. Munroe-Blum holds a Ph.D. with distinction in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduation, she embarked upon an academic career in Ontario, where she was a professor at York and McMaster universities before serving as Dean of Social Work and then Vice-President, Research and International Relations, at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Munroe-Blum has been McGill University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor since 2003 and her second term mandate will run until 2012.

Taking a leadership role in advancing research and public policy on higher education, Dr. Munroe-Blum has served on numerous distinguished national and international government commissions and advisory boards. In addition to being an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Specially Elected Fellow in the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, Dr. Munroe-Blum has received many distinctions, including honorary degrees from the University of Edinburgh, the École normale supérieure de Lyon, of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Université de Montréal, the University of Toronto, McMaster University Wilfrid Laurier University. In 2008, she was named “Great Montrealers” in the category of Sciences by The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

Dr. Munroe-Blum has been the President of CREPUQ since June 1 2007. The following have been re-elected as Vice-Presidents of CREPUQ for 2009-2010: Denis Brière, Rector of the Université Laval and Luc Vinet, Rector of the Université de Montréal; Michel Belley, Rector of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, has been re-elected Secretary-Treasurer.

Two new officers were named, Dr. Judith Woodsworth, President and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia University, as a vice-president, and Dr. Yves Beauchamp, Director General of the École de technologie supérieure, both with a two year mandate.

CREPUQ includes all of Quebec’s universities. It is a meeting place for the universities and a forum for exchanging ideas; it represents Quebec universities in dealings with the government and other partners concerned with higher education, provides research services for university administrations, coordinates and administers shared services for the universities, and is a resource centre and think tank for its members.
