Montreal, May 23, 2008 - A total of 710 candidates will be admitted in the regular residency quota in Quebec’s faculties of medicine as of July 1, 2008, an increase of 11.5 percent compared to 2007 and 60 percent compared to 2003. Following revision of admission requests from International Medical Graduates (IMG – Diplômés hors Canada et États-Unis), the total number of candidates accepted for residency in 2008 increased from 68 to 71, which is an all-time high. The number of IMG candidates admitted for residency in the regular quota has increased by 130 percent since 2003, when 30 International Medical Graduates were admitted for residency. Moreover, five more IMGs were admitted in the special quota, bringing the total number to 76.
“We are pleased with the progress being made,” said Dr. Guy Breton, Chair of the CREPUQ Medical Affairs Committee and Executive Vice-Rector of the Unversité de Montréal. “At the same time, this rapid increase in the total number of residents adds pressure to the faculties of medicine. Budget increases alone are not enough. Adequate staff is also needed to ensure the right level of guidance and support for IMGs transitioning to the North American context, especially given the lower success rates of IMGs in the residency program.”
“We will continue to work with the different stakeholders to improve the selection process and support so as to allow the greatest possible number of IMG candidates to successfully complete their residency and the exams of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, for specialists. Quebec needs all the doctors that its medical faculties can train,” concluded Dr. Richard Levin, Chair of the Conference of Deans of the Faculties of Medicine in Quebec and Dean of the McGill University Faculty of Medicine.
