Montreal, March 13, 2008 – The heads of Québec’s universities heads have reacted positively to the budget just tabled by Finance Minister and Conseil du Trésor President Monique Jérôme-Forget.
According to Heather Munroe-Blum, President of CREPUQ and Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University, “the confirmation of additional resources from federal transfers for postsecondary education is excellent news, as is the announcement of a supplemental government investment of over $50 million. I am especially pleased that the government has complied with CREPUQ’s request to make an investment over and above the federal transfers. This additional amount from other government sources is very positive and shows that the government considers university education and research to be important. There is no doubt that these new investments will have a beneficial impact on Québec universities and their contribution to society.”
The heads of Quebec’s universities were also pleased that the budget provides the necessary funding for growth of the student community and system costs. Furthermore, the budget confirms the government’s contribution towards the accrued maintenance deficit at Quebec universities.
“Today’s announcements have been very well received by Quebec universities and constitute a major step in the right direction with regard to the universities’ chronic underfunding. CREPUQ plans to work with the government so that other investments will be made to enable Quebec universities to improve their position compared to universities in other provinces, especially since most of them will also benefit from increased federal transfers for postsecondary education. In addition, other joint initiatives will enable us to maintain top-notch education and research so that Quebec universities will be able to compete with the best universities worldwide, fulfill their mission better and prepare a better future for Quebec society,” concluded the President of CREPUQ.
