Montreal, February 28, 2008 – The Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) is encouraged by the federal Finance Minister’s announcement of measures to support university research and education.
“The additional funding of about $80 million per year to the budgets of the three federal grant agencies and $140 million to Genome Canada, as well as the creation of Global Excellence Research Chairs, are three measures that show the federal government’s interest in university research and its importance in boosting Canada’s economic and social competitiveness”, declared Heather Munroe-Blum, CREPUQ President and Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University.
The creation of a Canadian Student Grant Program is also excellent news. The introduction of this program will maintain a minimum of $350 million per year to promote university education, all in accordance with federal and provincial jurisdictions.
Quebec’s universities are also happy about the creation of new doctoral scholarships for Canadian and international students, and the announcement of measures to help universities attract foreign students and facilitate their arrival in Canada.
However, CREPUQ deplores the fact that the federal government has not announced any increase in federal transfers for postsecondary education. The universities’ financial situation is precarious and the federal government should increase federal transfers for postsecondary education to restore the previous level of funding, which is needed to support quality university education and research and the universities’ ability to compete with the best universities worldwide.
